Document Express with DjVu is a suite of applications for creating and viewing highly compressed and very high quality scanned color documents in a format called DjVu. Typical compression ratios are between 300:1 and 1000:1, which brings new life and usefulness to color paper documents. A typical full-color, letter-size or A4-size DjVu document image at 300 or 400 dots-per-inch measures a mere 50KB, roughly the size of typical Web page.
DjVu document images are the smallest in the industry, up
to 1,000 times smaller than TIFF files, and anywhere from
10 to 100 times smaller than JPEGs or PDFs. A typical color
magazine page scanned at 400dpi results in a 46MB TIFF file
and a 1.3MB JPEG or PDF file, but is only a 56KB file in DjVu
format! Document Express creates highly compressed DjVu files
while preserving the quality of the document image.
DjVu is pronounced "day-zha-voo", as in the phenomenon of precisely repeated experience called "déjà vu."

Document Express Professional also enables customers to create or edit annotations and hyperlinks in existing DjVu documents.
For more advanced integration with applications, LizardTech also offers a DjVu Software Development Kit (SDK) for a variety of operating systems and development environments.
Document Express Enterprise Edition is available for Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms. Document Express Professional Edition is available for Windows operating systems only.
The DjVu file format is already supported in many applications. Additionally, DjVu files can easily be viewed in common Web browsers using free plug-ins available from LizardTech. LizardTech offers the free DjVu Browser Plug-in for Windows and Macintosh operating systems. The DjVu Browser Plug-in offers an automatic installation for Windows systems that is less than 1 MB in size. Free DjVu document viewers are also available for various Unix, Linux, and Solaris operating systems. Additionally, LizardTech offers a Java plug-in viewer that can be run on virtually any platform that includes Sun's Java Runtime Edition.
Adobe Acrobat offers a reliable way to store electronic documents for sharing and printing. However, for scanned color documents, Document Express with DjVu delivers document images with superior quality and a much smaller file size, making those color documents easier and less expensive to store, distribute and view. Document Express also allows you to easily convert your PDF documents to DjVu format, so you don't need to throw away your existing investment in PDF!

The key to the benefits of Document Express is DjVu segmentation technology. The characteristics of a DjVu document are divided into layers: the foreground layer, the background layer, and the hidden text layer. DjVu technology analyzes imagery and finds hard edges, such as text, and places these in the foreground layer. Softer, continuous tones, such as images, are placed in the background layer. Each layer is compressed using different methods to preserve quality and reduce file size. Additionally, DjVu documents can have a hidden text layer that stores optical character recognition (OCR) information for searching and indexing.
Document Express with DjVu includes a variety of tools that make it easy to integrate DjVu into your existing workflow. Document Express Enterprise Edition includes both a graphical application with "watched folder" capability and a group of command line utilities that can be run independently, as a batch process, or further integrated by system integrators into your own application.
LizardTech also offers a C++ based Document Express Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows (Visual Studio 6 and 7.1 .NET), Linux, and Solaris. Using the Document Express SDK, developers can easily create a more robust implementation for conversion to DjVu format.
The DjVu Browser Plug-in is a free, downloadable Web browser
application available at
www.lizardtech.com for Windows, Macintosh, and Unix platforms.
Additionally, the DjVu Browser Plug-in for Windows also doubles
as an ActiveX control that system integrators can use to quickly
integrate DjVu viewing into any Windows application.
Using the Document Express SDK, developers can build stand-alone viewing applications or build deeper integrations in to existing applications.
For viewing DjVu documents without a plug-in, LizardTech also offers Express Server, which provides robust capabilities for serving DjVu documents for viewing with or without a plug-in.
LizardTech's DjVu Browser Plug-in is supported in the following operating systems and Web browsers:
Yes and yes. Document Express with DjVu integrates with third-party OCR (optical recognition layer) engines for full text search functionality. Users viewing DjVu documents with a Web browser plug-in can simply click the "Search" icon to locate text within a DjVu document.
Document Express Enterprise Edition also includes an IFilter component for searching across a range of DjVu documents. The IFilter can be used within Microsoft Windows' native search capability, Microsoft Index Server, or Microsoft SharePoint.
DjVu documents can be added to document management systems that do not natively support the DjVu format by specifying a new MIME type and creating a pointer to the DjVu file on the file system. Additionally, Document Express enables you to export the hidden text (OCR) layer to XML, which can then be used for keyword searching within your DMS.
Yes. Document Express with DjVu offers full support for double byte characters such as Asian character sets. Document Express uses the Iris OCR engine, which supports over 100 different languages, including languages with double-byte characters such as Japanese, Korean, and both Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese.
